Philosophy and Purpose of Education and Research: Vision of Fostering Students of Kindai University Faculty of Engineering (KUFE)

In the highly-networked information society of increasing globalization, innovation is inevitably required by the engineers in the 21st century who will need not only to acquire practical knowledge and skills, but also to have morals and sensitivities to the new values and challenges.

Based on the spirit of the foundation and its educational philosophy KUFE has designated three goals of education in response to the today's needs:

  1. To be human: To foster students with common decency and morals
  2. To be professional: To develop engineers with a top-level professionalism
  3. To be global: To cultivate indispensable abilities for survival in the era of globalization

We aim to foster engineers and researchers who can learn a long-term perspective, and can realize a sustainable society by coping with a changing society and technologies.

The curriculum of KUFE is comprised of:

  1. Fundamental Education - Integrated courses: For the integrated and balanced development of capabilities such as spirit of self-exploration, logical thinking, expressiveness in writing, and interests in science, health, occupations, environment, to develop extensive, rich, and harmonious knowledge and personality.
  2. Fundamental Education - Foreign languages: Proficiency-based English classes are established so that students can acquire a basic command of English, and the systematic courses and balanced lectures, training, and remedial courses will lead to the enhancement of interest in foreign cultures, practical English ability, and an international perspective.
  3. Department Education basics and specialized courses classified and organized according to their fields and levels, and cross-bordering courses between subject groups are systematically located so that students can acquire a wide and applicable professional expertise.
    Practical contribution to the industries will be fostered through exercises, experiments and training by problem-based learning (PBL) and collaborative researches between industries and academics.
  4. Advanced Courses: Comprised of five programs to foster interdisciplinary perspectives - wellness, information technology, global engineering, pedagogy, and technology management.

Upon graduation, students can acquire the following academic qualifications:

  1. Not only common decency and morals but also a problem-solving attitude to embark on the challenges based on or beyond their knowledge of specialized fields.
  2. Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems and deal with the new challenges of realizing a sustainable society, making the best of their expertise as engineers and researchers.
  3. Ability to express ideas in writing; capacity to think logically; enhanced power of communication; and ability to take actions from an international perspective using a wide range of knowledge.
